The 30th Anniversary Twister Celebration took place in Wakita, Oklahoma, on May 15–16, 2026, marking 30 years since the release of the iconic 1996 film Twister. For a small town of only a few hundred residents, Wakita transformed into a gathering place for storm chasers, weather enthusiasts, movie fans, and visitors from across the United States and even overseas. Organizers estimated nearly 3,000 visitors attended during the two-day event. Luckily, myself and good friend Michael who runs MR Storm Media were part of those numbers! It was a 17 Hour drive total from Michigan to Oklahoma, but well worth every minute.

The Twister Movie Museum
The heart of the celebration was the Twister Movie Museum, which is located in the former Wakita community building and preserves props, memorabilia, photographs, and behind-the-scenes artifacts from the movie. The museum exists because much of the film's "destroyed Wakita" sequence was filmed in town, making Wakita permanently tied to the movie's legacy.

Actors and Special Guests
One of the biggest draws was the appearance of original Twister cast members:
Sean Whalen (Sanders)
Wendle Josepher (Haynes)
Jeremy Davies (Laurence)
April Little John Warren (Flashback Mom)
All actors spent time meeting fans, signing autographs, sharing stories from filming, and participating in anniversary activities. Sean Whalen in particular was a fan favorite throughout the weekend. It was particularly cool to see how down to earth each of the actors were. Not only did they sign autographs and take the pictures with us, they shared their on screen and personal experiences, talking about the favorite parts of the movie, reciting quotes, and showing how appreciative they were that everyone came out to support them. It felt like I was part of the film in a way, that closeness you see on screen between everyone was not just acting, it was real in their everyday lives. They continue to talk to each other today, and share videos, as well as do live sessions on their social media pages. So cool!

The event also attracted numerous meteorologists, storm chasers, and weather content creators who credit Twister as inspiring their careers. It was great to meet so many of them who had the same passion I share. Main Street was lined with vendors and visitors, creating a festival atmosphere that was much larger than the town itself.
A major attraction was the collection of movie-inspired and real storm-chasing vehicles. Among the most photographed was a replica of the red Dodge Ram from the film, complete with a Dorothy unit mounted in the bed, recreating Bill Harding's chase vehicle. Joe's famous yellow and blue Jeep Truck, and the truck used on "Twisters", The Tornado Wrangler itself!
Joe's Jeep!!!!! - "Wheres my truck?"
Bill's Red Truck - "Liabiliy Only"
Tornado Wrangler! - "If you feel it, CHASE IT!"
Why the Event Was Special
What made the anniversary particularly memorable was the mix of movie nostalgia and real storm-chasing culture. Many attendees grew up watching Twister and later became meteorologists, emergency managers, or storm chasers because of the film. The event felt less like a movie convention and more like a reunion of the weather community celebrating a movie that helped make tornado science and storm chasing mainstream.
The weekend offered a rare chance to stand in the actual town featured in the movie, meet original cast members, see iconic chase vehicles, tour the museum, and celebrate three decades of one of the most influential weather films ever made.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS EVENT POSSIBLE.
